How to Remove Mud from Carpet

*Before attempting to remove the stain, test an inconspicuous area for color fastness.

Method 1

Here’s What You’ll Need

  1. Vacuum cleaner
  2. Scrub brush or toothbrush
  3. 1/4 teaspoon clear dish-washing detergent (Dawn, Joy, or clear Ivory)
  4. 1 cup warm (not hot) water for solution
  5. Additional warm water for rinsing
  6. Clean dry white cloths or white paper towels
  7. Bowl for mixing
  8. Smooth/flat bottomed baking dish large enough for affected area
  9. Heavy object, like books or a jug of water

Step 1

Vacuum the area as thoroughly as possible.

Step 2

Tap the remaining mud with a scrub brush to loosen the material. It’s important to tap with the brush, do not scrub.

Step 3

Vacuum the area again.

Step 4

Apply mixed detergent solution to carpet using a damp cloth or paper towel.

Step 5

Working from the outside in–blot the affected area (do not rub or scrub) Scrubbing could damage the carpet fibers.

Step 6

Using a clean cloth or towel, apply small amounts of fresh water to the carpet to remove the detergent residue. Any detergent left in the carpet can result in re-soiling of the area.

Step 7

If any stain remains, repeat.

Step 8

To speed up the drying process, periodically add fresh paper towels to the bottom of the stack.  This wicking process may take several hours.

Step 9

They cleaned some rugs that were in my basement that had been damaged from flooding… I thought that Ayoub N&H Carpet and Rugs did a fantastic job. They even smelled fresh and clean when they were done. I would definitely recommend their services to others. They are also very reasonable on their charges.
