How to Remove Milk from Carpet
Method 1
Solvent and Detergent Method
*Before attempting to remove the stain, test an inconspicuous area for color fastness.
Here’s What You’ll Need
- Solvent- liquid, non-oily, non-caustic type sold for spot removal from garments. Use products for grease, oil and tar removal. Such as Carbona and Afta. Important: Do not apply directly to the carpet to prevent damage to the backing.
- 1/4 teaspoon clear dish-washing detergent (Dawn, Joy, or clear Ivory)
- 1 cup warm (not hot) water for solution
- Additional warm water for rinsing
- Clean dry white cloths or white paper towels
- Bowl for mixing
- Flat/smooth bottomed baking dish large enough for the affected area
- Heavy object, like books or a jug of water
Step 1
Apply solvent to dry towel / cloth
Step 2
Working from the outside in–blot the affected area (do not rub or scrub) Scrubbing could damage the carpet fibers.
Step 3
Repeat steps 1-2 until there is no longer any color transfer to the towel
Step 4
Mix detergent and warm water in small bowl.
Step 5
Working from the outside in–blot the affected area (do not rub or scrub) Scrubbing could damage the carpet fibers.
Step 6
To rinse the detergent from the carpet. use a fresh cloth to apply clean water. This will ensure that you remove all detergent residue.
Step 7
To absorb the excess water, apply a thick stack of paper towels to the area. On top of the paper towels place a flat glass baking dish weighted down with books, or other heavy objects.
Step 8
To speed up the drying process, periodically add fresh paper towels to the bottom of the stack. This wicking process may take several hours.
Step 9
If solvent remains, repeat steps 4-8
Method 2
Detergent Method

- 1 cup warm (not hot) water for solution
- Additional warm water for rinsing
- Clean dry white cloths or white paper towels
- Bowl for mixing
- Flat/smooth bottomed baking dish large enough for the affected area
- Heavy object, like books or a jug of water
Step 1
Mix detergent and warm water in small bowl.
Step 2
Using a damp cloth or paper towel, apply the mixed detergent solution to the carpet.
Step 3
Working from the outside in–blot the affected area (do not rub or scrub) Scrubbing could damage the carpet fibers.
Step 4
Using a clean cloth or towel, apply small amounts of fresh water to the carpet to remove the detergent residue. Any detergent left in the carpet can result in re-soiling of the area.
Step 5
To absorb the excess water, apply a thick stack of paper towels to the area. On top of the paper towels place a flat glass baking dish weighted down with books, or other heavy objects.
Step 6
To speed up the drying process, periodically add fresh paper towels to the bottom of the stack. This wicking process may take several hours.
Step 7
If stain remains, repeat process.
