Tufted rug construction
Let’s take a look at how exactly tufted rugs are made. A tufted rug is created by hand-or- machine-pulling yarn loops though backing material attached with an adhesive bonding agent. The rug can be patterned or solid. It generally takes less time and material to create a tufted rug, so it’s possible to get a high-quality item at a lower cost compared to other types of rugs. Tufted rugs can be found in stores such as Pottery Bard, Home Wayfair or even our online rug store. If your rug has a cloth backing, hiding the knots or stitches, you likely have a tufted rug.
Tufted rug issues
One of the most common issues of tufted rugs is the appearance of white powder under, on, and surrounding the rug. So, what causes this powder to show up? There are several reasons this problem will occur. One is the quality of the adhesive agent originally used in the rug construction. Lower-quality adhesives degrade more rapidly and will flake off into white powder. Another reason is filler used during construction. Like low-quality adhesives, these fillers disintegrate and come off in powder form. The age of the rug is also a factor — older rugs are more susceptible to powdering as the bonding agents wear down.
If you notice white powder coming from your tufted rug, it’s a sign that the adhesive has dried up and/or the backing has come loose which needs to be repaired.
